Late Summer//Early Fall Recipes: Texas Edition
The Fall season is upon us. The nights are offering some sweet relief from the heat and the early mornings have dipped to a delightful chill. Traditional Chinese Medicine as well as Ayurveda, an ancient medicine from India, considers the Fall season as prime time to cleanse. The Lung and Large Intestines are the paired organs that are highlighted during the fall season. The lungs symbolize the organ that expresses 'grief' while the large intestines are the system that 'let's go'. This is a perfect time to do some detoxification and express areas that need the gift of grief to heal.
You can support yourself through this seasonal transition with some yummy elixirs and plant based nutrition.
For a night time elixir tonic, charcoal is a unique ingredient to utilize for binding to toxins and helping them be escorted out of the system. I LOVE Cymbiotika’s Charcoal elixir. Somehow, this company has made charcoal taste delicious.
Charcoal LemonAid:
*Charcoal (21 pumps of Cymbiotika’s Charcoal or ½ capsule or ½ tsp powder
*Stevia, Monk Fruit or Local Honey
*12 oz Filtered Water
Best taken on an empty stomach before sleep. It will work on your system overnight
Mono-Meals are a great system reset. What is a mono-meal? This means eating just one particular food item for a meal, as a way to let your system work with just one ingredient at a time. This can assist with better digestion and ease on an overtaxed system. Papayas are one of my all time favorite mono-meals. They are so filling, help so much with regularity and help with skin health as well as protein digestion. The seeds are said to help with parasites - and have a nice peppery taste. I’ve known some folks to dry the seeds and then grind them like pepper for recipes.
Mono-Meal: Papaya:
*Slice your Papaya length wise
*Scoop out black seeds
*Use a serrated spoon to scoop out the flesh
*Share half with a lover or a friend
One last herb, I’d love to add to the mix - because if you know me, you know I love Reishi! Resihi is my ideal ally. What is an herb ally? Herb allies are plant medicines that you come to again and again to support your system. For some it is garlic. Helps with their immunity everytime. For some - they go elderberry, another delicious immune tonic. For me - Reishi for just about everything - Immune, Mood, Skin, Allergies, Calm. I love sharing this herb. My favorite is Duanwood Reishi from Dragon Herbs. I find this herb from this region speaks to me the best in terms of its effectiveness.
A great way to use herbs is in chocolate! Yes, this is an incredible delivery system that can get herbs in most people who may be averse.
Simply Divine Chocolate Recipe:
*1 cup Organic Raw Cacao Powder
*½ cup grade b Maple Syrup
*¼-½ cup local honey
*(You may also substitute Monk Fruit or Coconut Sugar for the above two sweets: use ⅓ cup to start and taste test with a friend from there)
*½ cup Organic Coconut Oil (melted down)
*8 capsules of Duanwood Reishi OR 2 tsp Reishi Powder
*Sprinkle of Pink Salt
Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl. Stir around until smooth. Pour ingredients into chocolate molds - or pour into the bottom of a pyrex container with a sheet of parchment paper at the bottom. Place in the fridge or freezer. Typically ready within 15-30 minutes. You can pop out of the molds and eat as you please. Wrap some up in foil for friends.
Take before meditation for a deeper experience. Reishi is known to enhance meditative qualities.
